Twenty-Three

Billy taking another hit off the joint in his left hand. Right hand pouring rye over ice in the glass sitting on his coffee table.

Had been that kind of day, so it was going to be this kind of night.

Exhaling a stream of smoke. Sinking back into his leather couch, bringing the joint and the glass of whiskey along with him.

After judging the idiot contest between Colt and Tanner (Billy ruling it a draw) and running wind sprints down Main with Hewitt, Billy had gone back to the station house. Partly to get out of the heat, and partly to see how his staff was getting on with the case.

Not much better, as it turns out.

Dustin and Zane’s country mile door-to-doors at the farmhouses around the crime scene hadn’t turned up any solid witnesses.

A few folks thought there might have been some lights on the road that evening, couldn’t say exactly when though. There were cars up and down that road all the time.

Dustin saying he talked to one woman, standing behind the screen door in her housecoat, who said she thought maybe she’d heard a loud yelp around the time in question. Might have only been a coyote, though.

On the forensics angle, tomorrow was the soonest they could get the results on the blood work and the bits of paper found at the crime scene. This despite some top-shelf flirting on Cookie’s part.

Cookie pointing out it could have been worse. As in getting-the-results-next-month worse. Maintaining this was proof that she’s still got it. Nobody disagreeing with her.

At one point Eric, the photographer and reporter at the paper, had stopped by to drop off a thumb drive with the digital pictures he’d taken at the scene. Also brought Billy a large manilla envelope containing a set of high-resolution prints in case Billy want to study the pictures that way. Sheriff Cady had once told Billy that looking at the same pictures printed out sometimes allowed a missed detail jump out at you.

Billy had taken his time examining the pictures on the large, high-definition monitor they used for crime scene photos at the office. Nothing in the digital pictures catching Billy’s eye, other than what he’d noticed earlier at the scene itself.

In his short time on the job, Billy had already learned that when looking over crime scene photos, there would be times when a new detail would jump out at him right away.

Other times, a small peculiarity he’d missed at the scene might take a while to reveal itself. And often there was nothing in the pictures that wasn’t there at his first live look at the scene.

Billy knowing the catch, of course, was there’s no telling which kind of crime scene it is, quick, slow to reveal or nothing at all. So he had to keep looking at the pictures again and again and again to be sure.

Coming up on nine o’clock now. Billy settling in for the evening. He’d kicked off his boots and changed out of his uniform as soon as he’d walked in the door.
